Kringle's Capsule Reviews: Lenny LeBlanc - Christmas Night

Lenny LeBlanc - Christmas Night

Terrific holiday offering from Christian singer-songwriter (and furniture maker!) Lenny LeBlanc. Originally released in 2008 Christmas Night's ten tracks are a heartfelt combination of Leblanc originals and tastefully arranged standards. Many of the tracks retain the 70's west coast pop feel born of LeBlanc's early success as a mainstream artists back in the day.

Highly Recommended!

Kringle's Capsule Reviews: Jubilee Gospel Singers - Wonderful Christmas

Jubilee Gospel Singers - Wonderful Christmas
Not so much a "Christmas" album, Silent Night is the only overtly Christmas track among the 14 seletions, but a fairly standard, workmanlike Gospel album. If you love Gospel music then by all means give this album a listen but if your looking for something more seasonable there are other far superior offerings out there

Christmas Update for 7.23.11

If you've ever bemoaned the lack of quality modern Christmas Carols and you live in the UK (and fancy yourself a songwriter), The Times of London wants you to take a crack at composing a carol for the 21st century. Here's the deal from the Times ...
"Write a new Christmas carol over the summer, enter our competition, and — if you win — hear it performed in polyphonic splendour by the mighty Bach Choir in its Christmas concert in aid of the charity Action Medical Research.
What prompted us to start a competition for new carols? After all, there are thousands in existence. They range from exquisite medieval lyrics such as Ther is no Rose of Swych Vertu and sturdy Victorian favourites — the likes of Good King Wenceslas and In the Bleak Midwinter — to, in our own day, the prolific works of John Rutter. Nearly every country where Christianity is practised has contributed to the genre, and the best carols are great travellers. Indeed, some foreign carols are so familiar that we don’t realise where they originated. Ding! Dong! Merrily on High was a saucy French knees-up. An unknown American gave us Away in a Manger. And We Three Kings of Orient Are comes not from the Orient, or even Leyton Orient, but Pennsylvania.
Yet even the richest of repertoires needs constant revitalisation if it is not to feel stale. Many is the carol service at which I have inwardly longed for a 25-year moratorium on the singing of O Come All Ye Faithful and O Little Town of Bethlehem. That’s one reason why we wanted to get budding composers and lyricists of all ages thinking afresh about carols. Another is the ubiquity of the genre. Is there another form of music and poetry that has the capacity to unite so many, from all generations, in hearty performance and benign fellow-feeling? Even at a time when fewer people sing hymns, carols have kept their universal appeal."

IndieGoGo Christmas Project: A Shoebox Christmas

"There's a stolen toy at Christmas time, a father stranded overseas, and a mother and two sons alone in financial crisis, struggling to come to terms with old-fashioned Chinese pride in a new country:
A Shoebox Christmas is a story about poverty, pride, fear and courage, and pushing through in times of adversity. The film explores what it means to be Canadian, so naturally it explores what it means to be an immigrant too. Our film delves into Canada's vast multi-cultural society in a poignant compact story that everyone will relate to."

Kringle's Capsule Reviews: Downhere - How Many Kings: Songs For Christmas (2009)

Downhere - How Many Kings: Songs For Christmas (2009)

Consistantly strong, occaisionally moving record from Christian Rock act Downhere. I was familiar with the band's work from tracks they'd contributed to Centricity/Word's Bethlehem Skyline Compilations. Those impressive tracks reappear here on thier 2009 full length Christmas release, which has become one of my favorite rock holiday albums. Downhere strike just the right balance between earnest worship and accessibly melodic rock.

Highly recommended.

Fave Tracks:
How Many Kings (and How Many Kings Reimagined, an updated version of the song that was a highlight of 2007's Bethlehem SkylineVol 1), A Gift For Christmas, Christmas in Our Hearts, What Child is This

Kringle's Capsule Review: OMP Allstars: Complete Christmas Classics

OMP Allstars: Complete Christmas Classics

Generic studio cover albums are a dime a gross come the holidays, clogging up bargain bins masquerading as Christmas hits collections but featuring third rate singers and threadbare production values. On first look I figured OMP Allstars "Complete Christmas Classics" to be just that sort of fly by night collection of dross, imagine my surprise when I found some of the tracks to be not just listenable but actually pretty good!

While I'll admit Complete Christmas Classics is surprisingly listenable I wouldn't go so far to say I preferred any of its versions of these holiday standards to my favorites (or that I'll even revisit it again come crimbo) but it is a perfectly acceptable collection with a mercifully few total klangers - I'm looking at you crap karaoke version of Fairytale of New York.

Christmas Album of the Day: Jul i Folkton (2005)

Today's album is a perfect Christmas collection for the rest of the year, unless your Swedish I suppose. This wonderful collection of Swedish folk musicians performing beautiful, understated traditional songs sounds just as sweet in the middle of a sweltering July as it does during the chill of winter. And if your anything like me your knowledge of Swedish folk music and grasp of the language is probably on the light side so many of these tracks won't have an instant Christmassy identification for us, just the thing when you want but a hint of the holiday spirit the whole year through.

Jul i Folkton translates to either Christmas Folktones or Christmas in Heavy Metal, depending which service I used - trust me it's Folktones or something similar. Each year Jul i Folkton tours Sweden and they will be out touring again in Dec. 2011. For more info visit Jul i Folkton's Website

Kringle's Capsule Review: The Refreshments - Christmas Wishes: The Best of Rock 'n' Roll X-mas (2010)

The Refreshments - Christmas Wishes:The Best of Rock 'n' Roll X-mas (2010)

Swedish purveyors of classic retro rock and roll with a rockabily roadhouse feel get thier Christmas on with Christmas Wishes: The Best of Rock 'n' Roll X-Mas. These boys may be from the land of Ikea and Abba but they channel real American roots rock nearly as well as fellow Euro pub-rockers like Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds and Dr. Feelgood and a fair number of contemporary American artists in the genre. I was pleasantly surprised by "Christmas Wishes", it would a perfect accompaniment for a holiday road trip or yuletide house party.

Fave tracks: The Xmas Race, Rock 'n' Roll X-mas, At Christmas Time, Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me, Christmas Must Be Tonight.

    New Stuff: Spotify Playlists

Over the years I've used virtually every legal online music source the internet's thrown at me and now that Spotify has officially launched here stateside I'm excited to give it a spin. I've shared links back to various services here in the past (MOG, Napster, Rdio, Yahoo, and the late lamented Lala) to mixed response but I figure the combination of a generous free listening allowance and the massive hype surrounding the launch makes it worth giving Spotify a try.

My first Spotify Playlist covers the Christmas albums I'm reviewing this month and will be updated as new capsule reviews are published, assuming Spotify offers the album being reviewed. (I'll also be adding Spotify links to reviews and songs/albums of the day, when relevant.) Plus I'll be adding new playlists frequently as well as sharing other great playlists as I find them.

    Kringle's Capsule Reviews: Winter Wonderettes

Winter Wonderettes is the charming holidday themed sequel to Roger Bean's off broadway musical comedy The Marvelous Wonderettes. Set in the late sixties this original cast recording of Winter Wonderettes is essentially a revue of classic pop holiday standards affectionately performed by a cast of very talented vocalists including Julie Dixon Jackson , Misty Cotton, Darcie Roberts, and Bets Malone. Even without any familialty with the musical's fairly thin plotline Winter Wonderettes is an entertaining holiday diversion for fans of fifties style girl groups. The albums only real drawback is the lack of full orchestration that would have put Winter Wonderettes over the top as a holiday must have.

Kickstarter Projects: Xmas on TV & A Cadaver Christmas

"Hi, I'm Alejandro Pina, the writer and creator of the graphic novel, "Xmas On TV". This past year I found a fantastic veteran comic book artist, Ignacio Di Meglio, who agreed to collaborate with me on the book. We both believe in the marketablity of "Xmas On TV" and want to see our graphic novel published."

"We have a finished independent feature film that is a zombie comedy titled "A Cadaver Christmas"

Our initial $7,000 dollar budget did not take into account getting representation and or securing distribution. We have had local fundraisers to promote the movie and raise funds for festivals, now we are trying to reach that next step by securing distribution, and or possibly having to selfdistribute as our last resort."
