Shelby Lynne's new holiday release "Merry Christmas" offers up the singers signature soulful twang adorning a set of stripped down country arrangements. There's nothin' fancy here and it works beautifully. A melancholy "Silver Bells" , the terrific "Ain't Nothing like Christmas", a somber low-fi take on "O Holy Night" and the bluegrass harmonies of "Christmastime is Coming" are just a few of the high points on this consistantly excellent album.
Shelby Lynne's Merry Christmas is wonderfully thoughtful and heartfelt, featuring true musicianship and first rate songwriting/arranging guided by spare yet perfect production. Highly recommended.
