A Christmas Carol (1910)



Wikipedia 
A Christmas Carol, is a 1910 silent film directed by J. Searle Dawley for Edison. It runs 10 minutes and is one of the earliest film adaptations of Charles Dickens' famous 1843 novella. It featured Marc McDermott as Ebenezer Scrooge and Charles S. Ogle as Bob Cratchit.

A Christmas Carol "Radio Drama" x 2 (Kickstarter Project)

While I love the idea of a new version of A Christmas Carol I think the BBC, among others, might disagree about any post-1937 dry spell. I also wish they had a couple of less costly pledge options, as it is I doubt I'll be going in on it at this time, though I do wish them luck and hope they secure their funding.so I can buy a copy come Christmas.

Produced by a Creator and Producer of the number one contemporary radio drama in the world, “We're Alive,” (www.zombiepodcast.com), will be the Radio Drama version of Charles Dickens beloved “A Christmas Carol,” the last radio version having been recorded live in 1937.

This will include a full cast, sound effects and music.

Blackstone Audio, (www.blackstoneaudio.com) has already agreed to the distribution world wide for both an English and a Spanish Version largely due to the Star Cast with verbal conformations, including Neil Flynn (The Janitor from Scrubs) Bob Bergen (Voice of Porky Pig) and Maurice LaMarche (Voice of Brain from “Pinky and the Brain”) to name just a few.

The Stingiest Man in Town (1956)

Fans of vintage holiday fare will appreciate Stagedoor's budget price release of the Original Television Soundtrack of this 1956 adaptaion of Charles Dickens classic morality tale A Christmas Carol. Originally shown as an episode of The Alcoa Hour this pre-Scrooge musical version of Dicken's novel stars crooner Vic Damone as young Scrooge and Basil Rathbone as the older, haunted Scooge. Rathbone gives one of the finest performances of his later career. Rathbone, and The Four Lads as a sort of Greek chorus of carolers, are my musical highlights of the show, though everyone involved is quite good.

While a bit old fashioned compared to more recent musical adaptations Stingiest Man still succeeds thanks to the supurb performances of it's veteren cast and a strong set of tunes that include a number of should-be classics.

Amazon also has a MP3 download of what I'm assuming was a later attempt to adapt the songs from the show into a spoken word recording. There's a narration, by what sounds like a much older Rathbone, linking the songs and while I imagine it's not as good as watching the original or even a straight recording it does help bring the story together a bit better than the song only soundtrack. There are two parts, each about a half hour in leangth - probably each side of the original LP - and it'll set you back, as of this writing, $1.78.

More than 20 years after The Alcoa Hour Stingiest Man was broadcast Rankin-Bass preiered an animated version of the musical starring the vocal talents of Walter Matthau, Tom Bosley, Robert Morse Dennis Day, Paul Frees and Theodore Bikel - an awesome assemblage indeed. The animated version is available as part of the Classic Christmas Favorites DVD along with nine other (mostly) classic holiday specials.

Welcome Yule - An English Christmas Revels - The Christmas Revels

New collection of performances, many recorded live, from the long running series of seasonal period entertainments offered each year by John Langstaff's Christmas Revels, in this case the Cambridge, Mass incarnation of the group. Olde English carols, dances and hymns, most, but not all, seasonal in nature, transport the listener back in time to a very different Christmas celebration than we're used to in these days of frantic shopping, overloaded schedules and holiday tidings poisoned by cynicism and irony.

Nothing can match actually attending one of these remarkable performances but there is a wonderful energy that more than makes up for the lack of visuals (and the occaionally shambolic production on a few of the live recordings), and while there is an occasional whiff of the amatauer theatrical, the obvious affection the performers feel for the material shines through.

Other Christmas Revels recordings include 2000's A Victorian Christmas Revels, 1995's Sing We Now Of Christmas, 1987's Christmas Day In The Morning: A Revels Celebration Of The Winter Solstice, 1982's Wassail! Yule Tube: Christmas DVD Preview

Here's the first of an occasional series looking at this year's new holiday releases on DVD.

The Warner Brothers Holiday Collection Vol. 1 & Vol. 2

We start with a pair of terrific collections of , mostly holiday themed, family flicks from Hollywood's golden age.

Vol 1 contains the 1938 version of A Christmas Carol starring Reginald Owen, the brilliant Barbara Stanwyck vehicle Christmas in Connecticut, Boys Town with Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney and The Singing Nun with Debbie Reynolds.

Vol.2 includes the one film in either set that I haven't seen - 1947's screwball comedy It Happened on 5th Avenue (also available as a stand alone release, as most of the films in these collections will be). I'll really looking forward to checking it out.

Also in Vol. 2 - the heart warming (and tear jerking) All Mine to Give, Robert Mitchum in Holiday Affair and the Greer Garson led bio pic Blossoms in the Dust.



The modern Christmas Comedy Classic A Christmas Story is getting a big re-release push with a pair of Special Edition/Gift Sets. Not only do you get this timeless holiday treat of a film with all the DVD extras found on the previous Special Edition release but there are cookie cutters, a recipe book and even a branded apron. If you've made the leap to blu ray you also get a "leg lamp stand".



And here are a few other releases of note coming up this holiday season...
